History

Representative Cricket History Overview

The Eastern Junior Club Cricket Association (EJCCA) was formally established in 1998 having its constitution ratified, accepted and full affiliation granted by the Eastern Cricket Union (ECU), although junior club league matches commenced in 1991. The association has blossomed into the flagship of the Eastern Cricket Unions junior cricket development programme for clubs within its geographical cricket boundaries. The ECU recognize our cricket programmes as valuable and integral part of identifying and developing talented junior cricketers from all sectors of our community. The association has twenty two affiliated junior clubs consisting of eleven traditional and eleven emerging clubs playing in twelve club leagues from October to March of each season in the under 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 age groups.

The past thirteen years of club cricket has culminated in the formal selection of representative teams in March under the guidance and approval of the ECU. These teams then participate in an Inter-provincial winter cricket programme from April to July against a number of other provinces.

Over the last five years our representative cricket programme has culminated in the prestigious “EJCCA Cricket Festival ” hosted by our association, under the auspices of the Eastern Cricket Union in July of each year. Since its inception in 2005 we have experienced a phenomenal growth rate, after having its humble beginning with matches against invitational teams from Botswana.

Once again the 2008 festival was held at the home of the Eastern Cricket Union, Willowmoore Park cricket grounds in Benoni with the following participating teams from:-

•  Botswana Cricket Association - 4th year

•  Swaziland Cricket Association - 3rd year

•  Namibia Cricket Board - 2nd year

•  Lesotho Cricket Association - 2nd year

•  Kenya Cricket - 1st year

•  Zambia Cricket Union - 1st year

•  Zimbabwe Cricket Board - 1st year

•  Zambia Cricket Union - 1st year

•  Ekurhuleni - 4th year

•  South East Gauteng - 3rd year

•  Northerns Cricket Union - 2nd year

•  Griqualand West Cricket Union - 2nd year

•  North West Cricket Association - 2nd year

Our association is indebted to our most valued corporate sponsors, Impala Platinum, Implats, Tempest Car Hire and Ericsson , who together with the Eastern Cricket Union have ensured that our association remains the flagship and benchmark of junior club cricket and development, without their financial backing we would not be in position to offer this programme or realise our mission statement, not forgetting the active assistance from the office of the Africa Cricket Association.

This “cricket festival” is becoming a corner stone of cricket and social development not only within the Eastern Cricket Unions geographical cricketing boundary or the borders of the Republic South Africa, but within the Sothern African Region who share our vision and mission statement.

There are a number of other Africa Cricket Association Affiliates who have already indicated an interest for the 2009 cricket festival and the future looks bright for the many players who will benefit from this unique cricketing opportunity and we believe the legacies of this event will be long lasting in the friendships formed.
